Lifeguard Instructor & Instructor Trainer (LGI/LGIT) Recertification (September 26th, 2026)

Description

The American Red Cross LGI/LGIT Recertification course is the required course for all Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers to recertify. During this course, Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers will participate in an in-water practice and polish skills session in addition to a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures.

 

PREREQUISITES:

• Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer certification.
• Successfully complete the online sessions for the Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification course prior to the in-person session:
  o Basic-level Lifeguarding blended learning online content
  o Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer Recertification online content

 

THESE ONLINE COURSES WILL TAKE UP TO 10 HOURS TO COMPLETE.  STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE ACCESS TO THESE COURSES 1-WEEK PRIOR TO THE IN-PERSON SESSION.

Instructor Candidates also have the opportunity to earn their basic-level Lifeguarding certification by way of test-out.  This will be accomplished after the in-person class session and will take approximately 1 hour.  We will also be offering Waterfront and Waterpark Lifeguarding Test-Out. These would also take an additional 2 hours each. You are eligible to do these test-outs whether or not you currently hold these certifications. This is a great opportunity! Requirements for basic-level Lifeguarding Certification:

• Complete the basic-level Lifeguarding precourse session.
• Complete the basic-level Lifeguarding Final Skills Assessment scenarios
• Successfully pass the basic-level Lifeguarding written test with a score of 80% or better

Requirements for Waterfront Lifeguarding test-out:

• Complete the Waterfront module precourse session
• Demonstrate Waterfront Rescue Skills
• Successfully pass the Lifeguarding and Waterfront module written tests with a 80% or better score

Requirements for Waterpark Module test-out:

• Complete the Lifeguarding precourse session
• Demonstrate Waterpark Rescue Skills
• Successfully pass the Lifeguarding and Waterfront module written tests with a 80% or better score

SCHEDULE:

Saturday, September 26th, 2026
9am-5pm (LGI/LGIT Recertification)
5pm-6pm (Optional Lifeguarding test-out)
5pm-7:30pm (Optional Basic-Level Waterfront or Waterpark Lifeguarding test-outs)
5pm-8pm (Optional Basic-Level Waterfront and Waterpark Lifeguarding test outs)

Participants are required to bring their own adult and infant resuscitation masks, a copy of the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual (digital or hard copy), a copy of the Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer’s Guide (LGITs only) (digital or hard copy), and a copy of the Lifeguarding Manual (digital or hard copy).  These items can be downloaded from Red Cross Learning Center or purchased from www.redcross.org/store. Participants who are taking the Waterfront module test-out can bring their own mask and fins, to ensure a proper fit.
